21 | TPDCONNECT AUGUST 2018 In recognition of the recent Emancipation and Independence celebrations, we have created a list of the foods that as Jamaicans we can’t do without and some of the places we believe you should visit if you should experience the magic of Jamaican cuisine. Rice and Peas and Chicken : A staple for Jamaicans on Sundays (and weekdays), this dish is an aromatic blend of inspiration from various cultures we interacted with during the post slavery period. People say they get bored when they eat the same foods everyday, but check a Jamaican everyday and ask whats for lunch. Best place for this dish: Lorna’s on Mountain View Photo taken from whatdadcooked.com Chicken Foot Soup: This meal is usually reserved for Saturdays, and involves a trip to Coronation Market for fresh vegetables and produce, and of course the famous Chicken foot. Jamaicans love to have a big bowl of soup on Saturdays or at a celebration of the life of someone who died. Best place for this meal: Many persons voted “their mother’s kitchen” or N10 in Vineyard Town Photo taken from youtube.com/morriscookingtime Sweet Potato Pudding: This dessert item is one we really can’t pass up, even if a doctor comments on its impact on illnesses like Diabetes, you might get an answer like “di one time nah kill mi” We love our sweet potato pudding, and all prefer a specific part to eat, whether it be the moist top layer or the crispy bottom and sides. Best place for this sweet treat: Jus Coool in Priory St. Ann (or Pudding man) Photo taken from Pinterest.com
