Step back in time: The Pyrenees were first tackled
on the 1910 Tour. Despite his courage, future
winner Octave Lapize had to walk up the final
stretch on the Col du Tourmalet.

To ride
When we revealed the route of this 106th
edition, we described it as the ‘Tour of high
peaks’. This is the first of those high peaks
as the finish is on the Col du Tourmalet, at
an altitude of 2 115m above sea level! It’s
a 19km climb following on from the ascent
of the Soulor. Inevitably, the authentic
contenders will emerge, especially on a
stage that at only 117.5km, is very short.
That should provide plenty of stimulation,
as well as lots of thought about the strategy
that needs to be employed. I can well
imagine specialist climbers being sent
ahead on the Soulor in order to provide
support for their leaders later on. Then the
big guns will join the battle.
