Chalon-sur-Saône
Not just a prologue: known as the TT specialist
who won three Tour prologues, French cyclist
Thierry Marie won his first-ever Tour stage in
Chalon-sur-Saône in 1988.
Caravan
Completed
With the first mountainous section of the
race completed, we move straight into a
stage for the sprinters that is also the longest
of this Tour: 230km between Belfort and
Chalon-sur-Saône, passing via Ornans to
commemorate the 200-year anniversary of
the birth of painter Gustave Courbet. As so
often after one of the race’s key strategic
moments, the stage could come down
to a pursuit between the peloton and the
breakaway. This is always a strategic and
finely calculated contest, as not every team is
interested in riding behind the break. But, in
theory, we should see the sprinters deciding
the verdict between them at the finish.
