LATIN LEAGUE · Fall 2025 · Torch: U.S.
334 teams from 29 states participated in a new JCL competition last year: Latin League. Latin League is a year-round team competition that tests students’ knowledge of Latin and the ancient Mediterranean world with questions from your favorite JCL contest categories.
“It’s designed to be a fun and flexible way for students to expand their knowledge of the ancient world throughout the year, encouraging teamwork and friendly competition,” said Clint Hagen, the League’s commissioner. “We hope that Latin League helps us expand the reach of JCL and fosters growth in local chapters.”
In Latin League, teams of five students compete head-to-head against other local schools in five rounds of regional play (October-February). Each monthly test has 100 multiple choice questions drawn from 9 standard JCL categories plus one special topic which is announced in advance. Teams have a two-week window to take the 45-minute test, which they do at their own school on their own schedule. There are four divisions: high school varsity, high school JV, middle school varsity, and middle school JV. Schools can enter two teams in each division. Varsity teams that win their region and high-scoring wild card teams advance to the playoffs, competing in the March super-regional round. The top four teams in each super-regional play in the April national final.
If you’re interested in competing in the 2025-2026 season of Latin League, registration is open through October 6. JCL Sponsors can register their teams at latinleague.org.
