HUMANITAS

Humanitas is derived from humanus, the Latin word for human. Coined by Marcus Tullius Cicero, the ideal refers to social responsibility, intellectual vitality and compassion for others.

“BLSJCL hosted a two day long book wrapping event where JCL members wrapped at least 110 Latin and Chinese textbooks. Soon after that, BLSJCL brought over 10 JCL members to volunteer at an Ovarian Cancer Run/Walk. To celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day, BLSJCL volunteered at Community servings, where volunteers assisted the kitchen team by preparing and packaging all of their medically tailored client meals from scratch.”

“We took inspiration from the activity ideas for October in the Club of the Month packet, one of which was to hold a Classically-themed pumpkin carving contest. For our October Club Meeting, we taught about the Roman holiday of Lemuria and the prevalence of ghosts and spirits in Roman life, and we partook in a ritual similar to what the Romans would have during Lemuria, where we threw black beans over our shoulders outside our Latin classroom and chanted “Ite ab larvae!” in order to ward off evil spirits.”

"We volunteered at our local Humane Society. This was another co-chapter event with Thomas County Schools JCL. At this volunteering session we folded towels and played with puppies. [Also,] our chapter’s president went to the middle school to help recruit middle school students to our JCL chapter and to serve as a teacher’s assistant helping the Latin teacher.”
