amendments update

CONVENTION THANK YOUS · Fall 2024 · Torch: U.S.

Thank You!

Felix Chen, 2024-2025 NJCL Editor

Alden Okoh-Aduoko, 2023-2024 NJCL Parliamentarian

This year, three amendments to the NJCL Constitution were brought to the Amendments Committee.

The first proposed amendment was to remove the "Present" option from officer election ballots. Under the current voting system (established last year), a candidate just needs more votes than any other candidate to win. Under this current system, voting "Present" just lowers the number of votes required to win. Since abstaining — not selecting any option — does the same thing, this makes "Present" redundant. Thus, the goal with this amendment was to get rid of the unnecessary option by removing "Present" entirely.

The second proposed amendment was to rename Historian to Archivist. The goal was to emphasize that the office was about not just making the scrapbook but also archiving documents and historical materials.

The third proposed amendment was to take two existing NJCL policies and codify them in the Constitution. These policies were (1) sponsors needing to have a certain level of ACL membership and (2) chapters needing to make sure members pay both State JCL and NJCL dues.

All three amendments received a majority from the representatives at the Amendments Committee Meeting. However, when State delegations voted to ratify the amendments, none of them received the two-thirds majority required to ratify. Thus, the NJCL Constitution was not amended this year.

Thanks to everyone who attended the Amendments Committee Meeting and who voted on amendments! If you have any ideas for new amendments to the NJCL Constitution or Bylaws, email the current Parliamentarian ([email protected]) and President ([email protected]).

Gratias maximas!
