Rupert Chen, 2022-2023 NJCL First Vice President

In 2014, the NJCL convention was held at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Students explored the Michael C. Carlos Museum and enjoyed the WoodPEC, five constitutional amendments were passed (who knew we used to have a “long distance” category for membership?!), and one snazzy new Public Relations and Membership Chair was elected: Ms. Catherine Sturgill, then of Florida.

The past decade has no doubt been an eventful one for JCL public relations and membership: COVID-19 put in-person events on pause for two years and sent JCLers to don headphones at their desks rather than costuming themselves for spirit, the board and committee reexamined the JCL song and creed and introduced new versions of each, and meanwhile the utility of Latin instruction continued to be questioned nationwide.

Throughout it all, Ms. Sturgill has served tirelessly on the National Committee, responding and adapting to new circumstances and difficulties. She has not only helped to navigate this beloved organization through unprecedented challenges, but has also advised a decade of First Vice Presidents, including me.

All of us JCLers owe a debt of gratitude to Ms. Sturgill for her service to the National Committee, but those of us who shared the privilege of her mentorship have special thanks to give for her thoughtful advice, her constant kindness, and indeed her general snazziness.

Thank you, Ms. Sturgill!

Ms. Catherine Sturgill
