NORTH CAROLINA
by ASHLEY DOWDNEY
Salvete omnes! The state of North Carolina had a marvelous virtual multi-state convention! Though we lost many things to the virtual aspect of convention, the rare multi-state feature let us form many bonds with fellow JCLers from NJ, PA, and MD. Classical camaraderie did not suffer in this bizarre year. Despite the odds, we still were able to join together through our love of the antiquated. Convention was still as eventful as ever, featuring intense games of Certamen, all the way to Olympika via Minecraft! Thank you to all who participated, as this year would not have been possible without your loyalty to Latin. We can’t wait to reunite with our new friends! We have stood together through this tumultuous year thanks to the diligence of the 2020-2021 Board and our stellar teachers.
OHIO

The OJCL has had a productive spring; our state convention, held in March, ran successfully in a virtual format. From testing to Certamen to elections, OJCLers competed and buzzed and cheered on Zoom. The state convention was smooth and just as full of excitement and education as any normal year. With the goal of holding more interactive events for our members, the OJCL also hosted a virtual AP review session, which featured translation practice, Kahoot! games, and tips and tricks from former Certamen masters. This summer, the OJCL is focused on preparing for nationals and continuing to engage with our members, both online and offline.

TJCL recently had its annual convention, virtual but very successful! We held numerous events and an awards stream to announce the winners. Two new competitions were introduced: Classical Minecraft Builds and Gustatio. Up to four students per school participated in the Classical Minecraft Builds event. For this competition, each group was given access to a superflat world for 24 hours in which they were required to create something classical like a temple, a forum, or anything in between. For the Gustatio event, we created classically themed-food, such as cookies that were made to look like Roman coins. We had a great convention and can’t wait for nationals!
