Torch: U.S. LXIX Winter 2019 | Page 4

Salvete, amici! If you would have told me in middle school that I would be on the national board of a classics organization, I would not have believed you. It began in the seventh grade when I started taking Latin due to the innate sense of curiosity and a rebellious urge to go against the expected course of action. I started attending my state’s fall workshops and conventions and was drawn to the community surrounding JCL. I wanted to get more involved, so I served as my state’s Parliamentarian in which I rewrote the current SCJCL Constitution. Later, as the SCJCL 1st Vice President I began to reach out to more schools and to develop a more harmonious JCL within South Carolina with an increased number of chapters.

After fostering such a love for the JCL, I developed a passion for striving to see growth and prosperity within its community. I decided to run for a national office this past year at my fourth national convention and I knew it’d be a decision that would impact the rest of my life. It has been a busy and eventful year thus far with my duties; however, I have enjoyed every second of it. Fall Planning Meeting was a huge success in Richmond, and I can’t wait for the JCL community to see what we have prepared for them.

Salvete, omnes! I’m incredibly excited for this JCL year. The NJCL officers just recently returned home from Fall Planning Meeting at University of Richmond, where we really got into the details for the 2020 convention. The campus is beautiful (with lots of shade!), the facilities are amazing (air-conditioned dorms!), and your officers are ready. I can promise you that this convention will be amazing. Sadly, however, we have a while to go before next summer. Between now and then, you can look forward to seeing the wonderful results of your NJCL officers’ hard work so far. Stay tuned for more updates and announcements. As always, please feel free to contact me at any time with any questions you have at [email protected] (or even if you just want to say hi!).

E corde,

Jocelyn Robertson

2019-2020 NJCL President
