VOICES

Salvete omnes,

I hope you are all staying healthy and busy! The past few months have been full of changes for all of us. Your officer board is working hard to make sure the JCLove can persist even in these new and challenging times. Although we are all disappointed we can’t see you in person this summer, we’re doing everything we can to make virtual convention the best experience possible. We’re also working on other things to do in the meantime, such as the Kahoot held in April and spoken Latin sessions held in May.

Going into the next few months, remember that the spirit of the JCL isn’t confined to conventions. State and national conventions are wonderful ways to be involved in the JCL community, but they don’t necessarily define the JCL. JCLers (that’s you!) define the JCL. As we all adapt to new situations, we can find new or different ways to continue the JCL community. Maybe that’s video chatting with those people you met in Fargo last year, or starting a virtual Latin reading group with your Certamen friends, or maybe it’s something I would never think of myself. Necessity is the mother of invention, and I have complete faith that JCLers will rise to the challenge of maintaining the JCL community.

E corde,

Jocelyn Robertson

2019-2020 NJCL President

Salvete mi amici,

I know these last months have been uncertain times. However, I hope all of you have been using the classics to keep yourselves occupied! Since the time of leaving my school and transitioning into virtual learning, the plans of the officers have taken a spin and a turn, but never lost track. Initially, the first project I knew needed to be altered was National Classics Week due to the excessive amount of activities that required leaving the house. Through a virtual meeting with my fellow officers, we were able to generate ideas to replace every activity that was asking delegates to leave the house. We then republished our edited version. The officers then decided upon a nationwide Kahoot that the officers created questions for. This plan came into action and with many steps between the officers and committee, we were able to conduct a very successful Kahoot game. The officers have been working on a variety of projects

to uplift the morale of our JCL family, including a nationals bingo game which was posted to our social media, and several more projects will be coming in the near future. A goal of mine in the upcoming future is to conduct more virtual meetings with state 1st VPs.
