Topsail Island Swing Bridge By Blake Loflin
Believe it or not, but crossing the Topsail Island swing bridge can be very exciting. The Topsail Island swing bridge, which connects the mainland to Topsail Island, NC, means many things to many people. It is not just a bridge to get motorists from one place to another. It is a historic landmark which symbolizes the slow and relaxed lifestyle of an island town.
The swing bridge was opened in November of 1955. It connects the mainland to a twenty-six mile island. The bridge has made it possible for Topsail Island to be developed and
has made it easier for people to access the island for vacationing, fishing, and other activities. The bridge is operated by bridge tenders and has been since it opened almost sixty years ago. The bridge tenders are always on the lookout twenty-four hours a day from the second floor of their station at the east end of the bridge. They monitor boats that are approaching and swing open the bridge when needed. The bridge is usually opened at the beginning of every hour, but some exceptions are made.
The swing bridge not only connects people to the island geographically, it also connects people emotionally. People get a good feeling when they approach the old green swing bridge made of concrete and steel. They know that when they cross over the bridge that a more calm
and relaxed lifestyle awaits. The roar of the bridge under their tires also brings feeling of nostalgia. The sound welcomes them to the beach. It is a distinct sound that lets them know
that they are entering vacation and relaxation. As people leave the beach, the bridge reminds them to come back soon to Topsail Island.
As much as the old swing bridge means to some people, there are already plans in place to replace it. It is old and outdated, so a new sixty-five foot high bridge will take its place. It should be built by 2017. Town leaders are planning to preserve the swing bridge near its original location, so people can see it from the new bridge. Although the new bridge will make traffic flow easier for boats and cars, many think that the new bridge will also bring unwanted
effects. The island will probably become busier and lose some of its familiar appeal.
