No stopping him!
2013 was a good year for JTL apprentice
Thomas Hyland. He successfully completed
his electrical apprenticeship with Balfour Beatty
Engineering Services in the summer, went on to scoop
the coveted title of JTL Best Apprentice for the North
West at our Regional Awards in October (page 8),
then became the UK winner of the JIB’s Overseas
Apprentice Exchange Scheme to head off to Australia
for six weeks in November. Tom – we salute you!
Third and fourth year apprentices – look out
for details of this year’s Overseas Apprentice
Exchange Scheme. The JIB says it’s looking
at expanding the scheme to involve other
countries but no details are confirmed yet.
Application forms should be available in
early summer. To whet your appetite, read
Tom’s blog of his time in Australia on the JIB’s
website www.jib.org.uk

Another success story of 2013 was Eleanor Davies of Swansea
who scooped the title of Best Apprentice at JTL’s Welsh Regional
Awards (page 8). Eleanor, one of only a handful of female electricians
in Wales, completed her apprenticeship whilst working for M&M
Electrical Co Ltd and took on the challenge of a Foundation Degree
in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the same time. As a
representative of JTL’s Female Ambassador programme, she promotes
girls and women entering the industry. Eleanor has since set up her
own company and has just taken on a female apprentice of her own.
