on classic Killing Joke, Prong, Mob
Research, Ministry, Godflesh, Pigface
and countless other cavalier recordings.
Shortly before his untimely passing
in 2007, he went to Crossroads Texas
and collaborated with ProTone Pedals
on a design project. The result was a
crazy analog chorus unit that sported a
built-in overdrive section that could get
downright filthy.
What do Ravens do in the wild? They
dig, kill and eat, which is exactly what
the control descriptions detail. Turning
the knobs reveals speed, overdrive
and depth manipulation. The switch
labeled Chop Chop turns the classically
rich chorusing into a hot melting wax
museum of true pitch vibrato. This is
great for detuned riffing with a shady,
thickly wicked edge. For standard
guitar tunings, the switch labeled
Kaw shifts the frequency response to
enrapture higher registers. Turning the
Kill (overdrive knob) up in this mode
injects a huge dose of early Albiniish filth. This, used in conjunction with
the chorus, is pure Big Black-in-a-box.
This is a rogue pedal made for a rogue
musician and a fitting tonal tribute to a
true journeyman.
RED WITCH EMPRESS CHORUS
This might be my favorite chorus pedal
of all time. Stereo swirls of bewitching
movement occur when two amps are
employed. Though the Empress Chorus
is slightly noisier than the TC SCF, it just
sounds so wet and immersive, like a
monsoonal distant dimension of sound.
The mix and depth work interactively
to bring in as much or as little LFO
presence as needed, with a huge range
of light and shade on dial. Speaking
of light and shade, one of my favorite
