EARTHQUAKER BOWS I am infatuated with one-knob pedals. As much fun as deep, complex tone tweaking can be, there are few things more valuable and satisfying than a single-knob dirt box that just gives up the funk right away with no dicking around. EarthQuaker’s Bows is one such pedal. This Rangemasterinspired circuit is powered by an NOS OC139 black glass germanium transistor, and its entire design is a beautiful expression of functional minimalism. It can whip up the gleaming harmonic explosiveness of a treble booster in Treble mode, or 14 TONE TALK // a fat, full frequency grunt in “Full” mode (selectable via a mini-toggle switch located below the knob). It’s a remarkably responsive to pick attack and volume knob changes, and it works wonders well when placed first in the signal chain and stacked with other dirt pedals. Pair the EarthQuaker Bows with a good Muff variant and prepare to be giddy with delight. Germanium Giants: 6 Superb Sound Sculptors
