INTO THE WHITE • CROWTHER HOT CAKE • TOMKAT MUFFER • EVENTIDE H9 This minimal board yields maximal tone possibilities. Like an obnoxiously new pair of white sneaks, this board looks like HAL 9000 or Steve Jobs put it together. The Hot Cake is all about boost or goosing in this setup and is interchangeable in order with the Muffer. I like to have the Hot Cake before the Muffer to feed midrange content from the tone control into the sizzling slightly scooped tones of the vintage BM variant. Many different shades of gain are available from this dirty duo and, of course, the H9 can do whatever we want to the tone. I opted for a SpaceTime patch I created called Golden Spatio—post-punk-ish chorus into a splash of verb and out to two delay lines set to a Fletchinacci Sequence of timed repeats. This all-inclusive algorithm is like adding four more pedals to the equation. Trippy? Yes. Did I lose an hour or two? Definitely. Two shades of gain and infinite realms of ambience await those who are willing to venture . . . into the white. In fact, another great white of a pedalboard comes to mind—the entire TomKat Pedals line with that new Daydreamer at the end. What a blinding rig that would be. 48 TONE TALK // Color Dreams: Change Your Style with Color Coordination
