GMercyU ’ s Sport Management program preps students for a thriving industry
We ’ ve all heard the saying ,
“ Find a job you love , and you ’ ll never work a day in your life .” GMercyU ’ s Sport Management Program Coordinator and Assistant Professor Maddie Herman , EdD ’ 24 , is making it a reality for her students .
“ At the start of students ’ first Sport Management course , I pose two questions to students : What is your dream job out of college , and what is it at the pinnacle of your career ? It informs me how to shape each student ’ s experience . The goals often change as students discover more to love about the industry , which is always exciting ,” Dr . Herman said .

6 TODAY the sports industry through a full repertoire of business courses and real-world experiences . Students in the program have interned with the Philadelphia Phillies , Boston Red Sox , Trenton Thunder , and XL Sports , just to name a few .
Dr . Herman puts students in the driver seat , giving them the support needed to apply the skills they learn in the classroom to real-world opportunities . Students in the Sport Business Association have helped host events such as the Sport Management Symposium , which featured panelists from across the industry , and organized a Flag Football Tournament that raised money for local , underresourced women ’ s sports teams .
Sport Management students also attend numerous networking opportunities during their time in the program which often lead to internship or job opportunities .
Carly Jensen ’ 22 attended Sport Management Night at the Wells Fargo Center during her senior
year and after learning more about internship opportunities at the event , she applied and participated in an arduous interview process before being offered an internship with the Philadelphia Flyers . That role helped her land a position as a Community Relations Assistant with the Boston Red Sox shortly after graduating , where she stayed for a year . She ’ s now back in the area as Ticket Operations Coordinator with the Wilmington Blue Rocks .
“ Dr . Herman has been my mentor since my sophomore year and has been key to my professional and personal development ,” Carly said .
This is only the beginning for Dr . Herman ’ s program . After spending the summer in Europe working and attending multiple international sport events , including the Paris Olympics , Dr . Herman saw firsthand that the sky is the limit for Sport Management students .
