Meaning Behind the Name At the dedication , Larry Genuardi spoke on behalf of the Genaurdi family about his father , Frank , and shared the meaning behind “ Legends Fields ."
My father was introduced to GMercyU in the late 1970s when he happened to be paired with Sister Lois McDonough [ GMercyU ’ s then VP of Development ] at a golf outing .
Dad found a kindred spirit in Sister Lois and not only did he support the school financially but also served on the Board of Trustees for many years and upon his death , his estate bequeathed a sum of money to the University .
But the event that spurred the fields to be named in his honor goes back to 1992 when my father was 75 years old . He was invited to attend a “ Baseball Dream Week ” in Arizona .
So , the story goes …
Catfish Hunter pitched three balls to Frank . He hit the third ball directly back to Catfish who threw the ball to Brooks Robinson at third base , getting the runner out . Brooks then threw the ball to Willie Stargell at first base to get Frank out . So , Frank hit into a double play with three Hall of Famers .
That ’ s why he was a legend .
Dad was proud of his experience , and he didn ’ t miss an opportunity to show off his baseball card and retell the following experience .
