LIGHTING
Garden and landscape lighting trends
Meanwhile, outdoor residential and urban landscape lighting is evolving in parallel, with a stronger emphasis on experience, atmosphere, and ecology.
Layered lighting design
The biggest conceptual shift is towards layered lighting, combining ambient, task, and accent lighting to create depth and usability.
Instead of a single floodlight, gardens now use a mix of path lights, uplights, and concealed strips to create a balanced, immersive environment.
Warm, natural light palettes
Cool white lighting is falling out of favour in residential landscapes. Designers now favour 2700K – 3000K warm to soft white tones, mimicking sunset or firelight to create a more relaxed atmosphere.
Minimalism and architectural integration
Lighting is becoming less obvious as a building feature and more embedded into the form of the building. Linear LEDs can be integrated into facades, handrails, and staircases, creating“ invisible” light sources that emphasise geometry rather than fixtures.
This aligns with contemporary architectural language: clean lines, reduced clutter, and precision detailing.
This also supports the move towards blended indoor-outdoor living spaces.
Off-grid solutions
Solar lighting has matured significantly. It’ s moved from old-fashioned stake lights to high-quality, design-led fittings with improved efficiency and battery storage.
This is particularly relevant in Southern Africa, where strong sun exposure makes solarpowered outdoor lights a practical option.
Smart and decorative personalisation
Garden lighting is becoming highly customisable, with colour-changing LEDs, app control, and even music-reactive systems.
At the same time, lighting can double as décor. Lanterns, woven pendants, and sculptural fixtures blur the lines between lighting and garden art.
Nature-integrated techniques
A notable design movement is“ moonlighting”, where lights( orbs) are placed high in trees or structures to mimic natural moonlight and cast soft shadows.
This reflects a wider biophilic approach, where lighting enhances rather than dominates the landscape.
