LIGHTING
From smart systems and low-energy design to warmer garden palettes and layered outdoor schemes, lighting is becoming central to how buildings and landscapes feel and perform.
To Build looks at lighting trends shaping buildings and landscapes in 2026 and how they apply indoors and in the garden.
Across architecture, lighting has shifted from a purely functional layer to a core design and performance system. Designers are increasingly using lighting to support comfort, efficiency, atmosphere, and identity.
Four key themes are emerging globally:
Smart and responsive lighting systems
Lighting is increasingly being integrated with digital building management systems. App-based control, motion sensing, and automated dimming are becoming standard, allowing buildings to respond to occupancy, daylight, and even weather conditions.
In commercial and high-end residential arenas, this includes zoned lighting environments, with different scenarios for facades, circulation areas, and social spaces.
Sustainability and energy efficiency
LED technology is now widely used, but the emphasis has moved further towards low-energy ecosystems, including solar supplementation and adaptive brightness.
Materials are also changing. Fixtures increasingly use recycled metals, glass, and natural finishes, supporting the repurposing and reuse of materials.
For designers, lighting is now part of broader occupant wellness and green building strategies.
