Led by M & D Construction and designed by SCIP Engineering Group, the project required highly customised concrete solutions from the concrete supplier. The structure is located in a seismically active zone and needed additional reinforcement in the lower part of the shaft to withstand ground acceleration above 0.1g. This required increased steel density and a concrete mix that could provide strength, flowability, and controlled heat of hydration.
AfriSam’ s Product Technical Team Leader, Mduduzi Ndlovu, says that the concrete mix was formulated with a high proportion of supplementary cementitious materials( SCMs) to minimise the heat produced during curing.
Despite the low OPC content, the mix exceeded expectations – achieving the target strength of 51 MPa in only 28 days...
Constant communication between the supplier and contractor ensured the correct number of trucks arrived and delivered precisely what was needed.
