CEMENT & CONCRETE
Seismic-resistant
AfriSam
A local cement and concrete manufacturer is supplying specialised readymix concrete for a complex 43-metre-high water tower near Johannesburg. Being built by M & D Construction, the tower is designed to withstand seismic activity and support the new Goudrand megacity.
South African-owned company AfriSam is playing a pivotal role in constructing one of Gauteng’ s largest and most technically complex water towers, supplying specially designed readymix concrete to meet both structural and seismic performance requirements.
Situated near Main Reef Road, south of Johannesburg, the 43-metre-high water tower will hold 3.2 megalitres of water to support the new Goudrand megacity development.
What is Goudrand Megacity?
Goudrand is a large, planned " megacity " development in Gauteng, South Africa, designed to address the housing shortage by creating a mixed-use area with thousands of housing units, educational facilities, and commercial spaces. It is part of the Gauteng government ' s initiative to establish new, self-sufficient cities and is situated near Randfontein Road and Dobsonville Road, close to Soweto and Johannesburg.
Designing the tower’ s first 8 m was crucial- it experiences the most significant stress during a seismic event.
