There’s an old observation in fashion that hemlines track the economy: skirts rise when confidence is high and lengthen when it isn’t. It has never been entirely scientific, but I’ve always found it a useful shorthand for reading the mood of a moment. Right now, the length everyone seems to be wearing is the midi. Not short, not long, but deliberately in between. It feels like exactly the right metaphor for where luxury finds itself this summer.
At Fox Communications, much of our work sits at the intersection of luxury, travel and lifestyle, and across nearly every conversation I’ve had this quarter, the same pattern keeps surfacing. The most sought-after invitations are no longer arriving by inbox. They’re appearing in private WhatsApp groups, through trusted introductions, or as a discreet ask to dinner with a dozen carefully chosen guests. The events that once filled a room are shrinking, deliberately and by design.
This is not only an aesthetic preference. In a period of real economic uncertainty, overt displays of wealth feel increasingly out of step. What is replacing them is something more private and selective: connected privacy rather than disconnection. The ability to choose what you share, and with whom, without retreating from the world altogether.
I wrote recently about a related idea: that the biggest results rarely come from dramatic transformation, but from small, consistent habits repeated until they add up. The same logic now applies to luxury. The grand gesture is losing some of its power. In its place is something smaller, repeated and accumulated: a string of considered, well-chosen moments rather than one big one. This is where Fox Comms has always felt most at home. Genuine human connection is our focus, and we will take the small dinner or private members’ lunch over the crowded ballroom every time.
