There are some big shoes to fill after the Highlanders graduated top scorer Brynne Quirion , who scored five goals in back-to-back games last year . But Harwood ’ s offense has done the job to this point while getting production from different sources .
“ Last year we had Brynne up front ,” Harwood coach Mike Vasseur said . “ This season , everybody knows that we just need to contribute as a team . Everybody needs to go to goal . We don ’ t have someone who ’ s going to score 20 goals in a season . We ’ re going to have a bunch of people who are hopefully going to score four , five , six , seven and eight . It ’ s going to be a more balanced attack , and I think overall a tougher attack to defend .”
The Highlanders are 3-0 after beating GMVS , Hartford and Lyndon .
Harwood made a surprise run to the semifinals last fall before being knocked off by Montpelier .
The Highlanders found an offensive rhythm late last year that they are hoping to keep going this season .
In Harwood ’ s opening game , freshman Ashley Proteau buried a pair of goals . Three matches into the season , it ’ s clear that she ’ s a key piece of the offense .
“ Ashley is a natural soccer player ,” Vasseur said . “ She ’ s doing very well . She ’ s stumbled upon some of the normal freshman changes that always happen — people are bigger , people are stronger and people are faster than she was used to . But she ’ s really adapting well and pressing forward . We have a lot of confidence and hope for her .”
The Highlanders have appeared in the D-II semifinals in three of the last four years but haven ’ t won a state title since 2010 .
The team is led this season by a pair of center backs — junior Lilianna Ziedins and senior Camille King — who anchor the defense . Behind them , three-year starter Eve Golden is the team ’ s starting goalie .
In the midfield , Harwood features juniors Kyle Heckler and Hazel Macmillan .
“ So far we ’ ve done pretty well ,” Vasseur said . “ We ’ re still learning . I don ’ t think that we ’ ve put a complete game together , but I believe everybody ’ s working hard .”
