Field hockey : Seniors still lead teams

Expectations are high for both the U-32 and Spaulding field hockey teams with both teams slated to take the field this coming Saturday . The Raiders return a solid squad after losing some depth due to graduation , as the Tide look to gain ground after a successful season that saw them bow out to Harwood in last year ’ s playoffs after a long drought of postseason success .
“ The team looks great ,” U-32 coach Melissa Mueller-Moore said . “ We have five extremely strong returning players from last year ’ s team . Otherwise we ’ re fairly young in terms of varsity , but I think we ’ re going to have a lot of depth and have a lot of skill with some of the players I ’ ve pulled up .”
The Raiders seemingly remain in the upper / middle class of field hockey elite year after year , even after graduation , and with their bump to the Metro League for this year Mueller-Moore is looking forward to seeing how her team responds to the improved quality of play and the demands that such a move requires .
“ Moving out of the Capitol League to the Metro is something that is really exciting for me ,” Mueller-Moore said . “ We will still play Spaulding and Woodstock , but I think there will be some consistent competition across the season . We played two of the four teams that are in the Metro in scrimmages over the past weekend and I think we held our own .”
Returning from last year are seniors Addie Hannah , Zoie Beauregard , Sam Fielder , Riley Hudson and goalie Emily Cremins . Last year ’ s squad was sent home in the quarterfinals of the Division II playoffs by Woodstock , but there ’ s no reason to believe that this year ’ s team can ’ t push the envelope even further .
Mueller-Moore has headed the Raider team for 22 years , which in itself is a testament to her desire and passion for the game . She remarked about how field hockey season is her favorite time of the year and that while a season may start slow , it ’ s how the team develops by the end of the season that determines whether her squad will be the last team standing .
“ Getting the players to understand the power of playing at the varsity level is important ,” Mueller-Moore said . “ I have 15 players , and never take more than 16 . At the moment , those five returning solid players remain our strength with their desire and communication , they ’ re allaround skilled players that play well from the front to the back .”
Tabitha Lord coaches the Crimson Tide team and returns a skilled team with quickness and physical play .
“ Skill-wise , I think we outplayed Harwood in that game last year but they won
