Nestled in the heart of a secluded residential neigh-
borhood in the old Lamar School, the Meridian Activity
Center is operated by Meridian’s Parks & Recreation
Department. The center offers an array of activities and
classes open to any adult age 21 and older.
“About 90 to 95 percent of our people are 55 and
older. We would like to reach more of the younger peo-
ple so that we have a better variety of age,” said the
center’s director, Kathy Anderson. “It is good when we
do that because the younger ones can be mentored by
the older ones especially in some of the sewing classes or
quilting classes. It is good to see how they interact and
share ideas. So many bonds and friendships have been
formed in these classes.”
The Meridian Activity Center offers six five-week class
sessions each year. Exercise classes include yoga, floor
exercise, strength training, seated exercise, slimnastics,
Building Better Bones and Tai Chi. There are classes on
beginner sewing, hand and machine quilting, smocking,
crochet, knitting, heirloom sewing and Swedish weaving.
Art, stained glass, floral design, ceramics and advanced
painting classes are also available.
The ceramic studio is open from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
on Tuesday and Thursday and offers an extensive selec-
tion of molds. Participants pay for the class and a mini-
mal supply fee.
The cost to register for a class for those living inside
the city limits is $27 if you are under age 55 and $15 for
adults over age 55. For those living outside the city, the
cost is $32 for those under 55 and $18 for those 55 and
older.
The Queen City Duplicate Bridge Club meets at the
center and offers a beginner bridge class on Wednesdays.
Friday is an independent day where friends get together
to play cards, dominoes, jigsaw puzzles, board games,
and pool. A walking track behind the center allows
seniors a place to get outdoor exercise in a fenced area
away from traffic. Monthly, the center offers bingo and
a Movie Day, both which are popular. Books can be
checked out from the library, and several of the area’s
retiree groups meet at the center.
“The Meridian Activity Center is utilized pretty heav-
ily with 250 to 300 guests taking part in activities there
