Activities to get older adults outside in spring
By Kimberly Gowdy Contributing Columnist
After months of colder weather and the recent snowstorm all while during a global pandemic , springtime is finally here . I have been yearning to see budding flowers and enjoy extended spring days . It can be especially refreshing for older adults who have spent the winter cooped-up indoors . Fresh air , extended daylight hours , warmth and sunshine can play an important role in renewing the spirit and enhancing quality of life .
The Benefits of Fresh Air and Sunshine
Exposure to sunlight and fresh air offers many health
Gowdy benefits such as greater energy , reduced stress , and improved sleep . Fresh air cleans the lungs and helps bring more oxygen to the body which creates increased energy to complete more physical activities and mental clarity . A little daily sun does the body good . Spending time in the sun can give a boost of Vitamin D which improves our brain , bones , and muscle function . Also , sunlight is thought to help ward off depression , because the “ happy ” chemical serotonin is higher in the brain during the time of year when days are longer .
To help older adults welcome spring , we ’ ve compiled 7 ideas for outdoor activities that can help rejuvenate mind , body , and soul .
• Take a walk . Studies have shown that even 10 minutes of walking each day can help older adults maintain strength and agility . Many local parks and nature trails in our community have options for people with varying levels of mobility . Or a simple stroll around the neighborhood to take in the scenery can be just the right change of pace .
• Do some spring cleaning . A little spring cleaning can create a healthy and comfortable living environment . Open those windows and let the fresh air in ! Add touches of vibrant colors to brighten up your home décor . It is also a perfect opportunity to go through family keepsakes and revisit special memories . Pull out those old albums and reflect on precious memories spent with friends and family .
• Go on a picnic . A little creativity can turn even the most routine activities into adventures . Try turning your next meal into a picnic . Grab a blanket and head to your favorite community park . Bring a book to read or , better yet , bring a friend and share a meal together in the fresh air .
• Install a bird feeder . Once the birds start chirping and the trees start blooming , you know spring has arrived . An abundant food source will help attract these feathered friends to your yard . Install a bird feeder near your window or hang from your favorite tree .
• Plant a garden . If you like to get your hands dirty , consider planting a container garden . Spring is the right time to start cultivating the earth for herbs , vegetables , and flowers . Seniors are also more likely to eat healthier if they grow their own vegetables . A container garden is perfect for seniors who are new to gardening since they can start with only one or two plants . Having to tend to their little gardens also encourages seniors to get outside for at least a few minutes each day . Gardening is beneficial for older adults because it can enhance their emotional health by relieving stress .
• Go Fishing . The allure of catching a fish is all it takes to get competitive seniors ready to head to the lake . Challenge your loved one to a fishing contest to see who makes the first or biggest catch . Let the fun times begin while reeling the big ones in !
• Get some exercise . Staying physically active can boost your energy levels while helping you maintain your independence and even combat symptoms of illnesses . Low-impact activities like walking , yoga , swimming , and water aerobics can help with flexibility , balance , and strength . Also , physical activity can lower the risk of falls and improve cognitive functioning . Adults need at least 30 minutes of physical activity to reduce the risk of chronic disease .
The most important thing for older adults is to get up , get moving , and enjoy all of Mother Nature ’ s beautiful gifts that she has to offer during the Spring season . Focus on the enjoyment of being active and creating sweet memories that you will cherish for years to come .
