LABOUR PLEDGE TO SCRAP TUITION FEES AS EARLY AS SEPTEMBER 2017
SNAP!
“We will scrap tuition fees and ensure universities have the resources they need to continue to provide a world-class education. Students will benefit from having more money in their pockets, and we will all benefit from the engineers, doctors, teachers and scientists that our universities produce.”
Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has pledged that he wants to scrap tuition fees and make university free again.
Students could dodge the mammoth £9000 tuition free as soon as September 2017 should Labour win the general election on the 8th of June. Labour have also said that they want to extend the offer of free tuition to EU students – providing that the same applies for Brits choosing to study in Europe – Corbyn has stated that this will be a crucial part of the Brexit negotiations, should his party win.
So, what does this mean for students who have already started a university course?
Labour have said that those who have already started a course at university won’t need to pay from 2018 onwards. So, If you graduate next year you’ll be the last graduates who are liable to pay back their tuition fee loans of £27,000 after stepping over the earnings threshold.
However, Labour has promised to protect those graduating from inflation – which would otherwise, significantly increase the mound of debt that they’re already in. Corbyn claims that he is going to look into ways of reducing the debt that students are lumped with in the future. The Labour party understand that £27,000 worth of debt looming over you before you’ve even started working is a huge burden to say the least.
