MUSIC: INSECURE MEN.
So, Insecure Men… what’s the meaning behind the name?
where did it come from?
The band name was a joke that had been floating around for some years between me Lias and Nathan... I think it was Tamlan their big brother who came up with the original joke.
The insecure men album is a covers album? What drove you to do that as opposed to writing your own material?
I’ve made an album of my own songs that we have nearly finished recording it will be out this year. The covers album was just something I did for fun.
What made you choose some of the songs? Are they just old favourites? Guilty pleasures? That sort of thing?
I asked people what songs they’d like to hear. A few friends made some suggestions other than that they’re just my favourite songs.... nothing guilty about it!
Would you say that you are one of those people who strays away from listening to music whilst recording an album?
I always listen to music... especially when I’m recording
I’m actually surprised that The Fall haven’t made it into volume one. Would you ever consider covering one of their songs? If so which one?
The songs I covered were ballads, I guess... of some kind. The Fall never make ballads; although I’m sure a lot of people would disagree. If I was going to cover a Fall song, I guess I’d cover ‘Telephone Thing’. The Fall have recorded some great covers. ‘I hate you’ by The Monks and ‘White Line Fever’ are my favourite Fall cover versions.
What’s the live dynamic with Insecure Men like compared to the energetic shows you’ve done with the Fat Whites? I think I read somewhere that you wanted to tour sitting down more.
Well, I wanted it to be like a wedding band or a hotel lobby band. We have lots of amazing musicians in the band; saxophone, vibraphone and pedal steel. I plan on doing a tour of working men’s clubs and jazz venues with seats. I might be doing the album launch at Ronnie Scotts. I think it'll be a welcome change from the chaos of The Fat White Family and hopefully it'll deter the majority of the Fat Whites fan base from coming to the shows.
