“ Blessed are the poor in spirit , for theirs is the kingdom of heaven .” ( Matthew 5:3 )
This blessing is the secret behind a genuine salvation rather than ‘ religious ’ beliefs or mental acceptance of the Gospel . Everyone who truly comes to Yeshua for salvation has to start from the profound and deep knowing of their own spiritual lack and deficit . We cannot pontificate our way to being spiritual giants , reach “ nirvana ”, or otherwise save ourselves by our own merits . If you are missing this part in your salvation , just start over here again because there is no salvation without internalizing this truth . We have to come to Yeshua with the poverty of our spirit , and then we receive the kingdom . The kingdom is the blessing given here , because Yeshua is saying it is given to those who come to Him for their spiritual needs . ( Isaiah 66:2 )
“ Blessed are those who mourn , for they shall be comforted .” ( Matthew 5:4 )
The next key and early step in our salvation and spiritual growth is our reaction to our own sin . While this blessing can certainly refer to mourning for loss of any kind , in the context here it can also mean mourning for our sin ( Psalm 38:4-7 ). This is critical both early in our spiritual walk and once we are more mature . First , without mourning for your sin and its consequences , you will never allow yourself to be changed by the Holy Spirit . You may work to stop the sinful behavior outwardly , but the root of iniquity in your heart will not be removed .
Secondly , without mourning for our sin , our knowledge of the Gospel will become arrogant religiosity ( Luke 18:9- 14 ). The promise that we will be comforted is an amazing promise of mercy , and truthfully an encouragement to push into the mourning for our sin rather than hiding from it . Why should you need comfort unless you actually mourned ? Do it . Mourn for your sin . Then let the Holy Spirit bring comfort to you .
“ Blessed are the meek , for they shall inherit the earth .” ( Matthew 5:5 )
The best way I can describe meek in this case is humble obedience . It is not a sign of weakness , but it is also not being prideful either . In our spiritual growth , if our salvation does not lead us to humble obedience , then yes , we should question the authenticity of whether we have that salvation ( James 2:17-18 , Ecclesiastes 12:13 ).
