Why would they need to remember that their ancestors were slaves ? The Israelites didn ’ t conceal their humble origin . In fact , they persisted in remembering their slave status so that the difference between serfdom and freedom would remain eternally clear in their minds .
In this regard , Deuteronomy 24:17-18 says , “ You are not to twist justice for an outsider or orphan , and you are not to take as collateral a widow ’ s clothing . But you are to remember that you were a slave in Egypt , and Adonai your God redeemed you from there . Therefore I am commanding you to do this thing .”
Adonai commanded the Hebrews to recall the suffering , hardship , and bitterness of slavery . It is through the process of identification and remembrance of suffering that we commit to never participate in or condone these things from happening again .
And for followers of Yeshua today , we also need to remember that we were redeemed from a fallen state . We were slaves to the twisted system of the world before we were snatched off of the path of hopelessness and death . So God ’ s words also apply to you and me . Remembering we were slaves , but now we are free !
But to live and thrive in continued freedom requires intention and watchfulness . Consider these biblical truths as you contemplate the freedom God has made available to us :
