There is a key point that is worth noting when it comes to the importance of understanding and identifying the role of followership — the role of a follower is essential to fulfilling and completing the mission and vision of an organization . People are the followers , and these people are the ones who develop , produce , implement , and fulfill the objectives and accomplishments of an organization . Being a follower is the primary role and responsibility for all people within organizations , as we spend the majority of our time fulfilling the role of a follower compared to that of actually leading . Therefore , it is important to understand followership as it is a key ingredient to becoming an effective leader and influencer of people .
As believers in Yeshua , I would submit that we have a higher calling and mandate before God to follow well , as seen in Yeshua ’ s appeal to his disciples , “ If anyone wants to follow after Me , he must deny himself , take up his cross and follow Me .” ( Matt . 16:24 TLV )
Are we following others well ? Are we easy to lead ? Are we demonstrating and living our lives out as active , engaged , and purposeful followers ? Are we following Yeshua well , and is that visible in how we live our day-today lives ? Are we content in joining in on the invitation to be a good follower even if we are individually not called to greater levels of leadership ?
May it be said of us that we serve and follow Yeshua and those whom He has placed in leadership over us well . May it be said of us that when Yeshua calls us saying , “ Come , follow me ,” ( Matt . 4:19 ) that we are not resistant to learn but embrace the invitation to become the greatest followers we can be , and allow discipleship to be our process and direction of our lives . And when the time comes for us to step into roles of leadership , may we first submit our leadership to Yeshua , but may we also lead others more effectively having learned the lessons taught to us by our leaders , through the art of followership .
