There are numerous books , websites , journals , schools of thought , and theories on the role and study of leadership . However , leadership cannot be fully understood and studied apart from the role of followership . Followership focuses on the mutual , dual relationship and interaction that takes place between leaders and their followers . Furthermore , followership addresses not only the role of followers , but also the beliefs , attitudes , and behaviors of followers , as well as the effect and influence they impart on leaders . becoming effective leaders . Equally important is the realization and need for effective followers and how to be an effective follower . Although viewed by some to be a weaker position and role , the characteristics of being an effective follower are essentially what is needed in becoming an effective leader . In the Gospels , we read how Yeshua chose twelve ordinary men — not priests or elite Torah scholars , or even leaders , but fishermen whom He called His disciples . A disciple , or talmid is quite simply a follower . Everyone follows , however , not everyone may actually lead or be called to lead . Thus , the importance rests on the
