her face in my rear-view mirror and it appeared that
her eyes were squeezed tightly shut, but maybe
that was just the wind. As the speedometer needle
approached warp-speed (nearly 40 miles an hour),
just as I was getting ready to shift out of second gear,
she asked me to slow down.
I really wanted to just PEG the throttle and see
what would happen, but I didn’t.
Besides, I had promised my wife that I would not
scare Molly.
After a few miles she started to relax a little, her
death grip on my shoulders slackened a bit. On a
sunny, 70-degree day in December, we cruised along
the country roads , past Garth Brook’s land, then
turned along Keatonville Ridge. When we reached
Highway 20, we made a u-turn and went back to my
house. We were out maybe all of twenty minutes or so.
When she got off the bike, she had a great big
grin on her face.
“I’d like to do that again” was her response.
To Molly Pezold, and all those others who are not
afraid to try something new...I salute you.
