vote on the distribution of those
funds. The majority is given to
individuals in their area. The
basis of the distribution ranges
from persons with ailments,
terminal illnesses to tornado and
fire victims. The list of recipients
since 2003, the inception of the
run, has been numerous. Meeting
many of those recipients at the
run is always a joy for me. This
is a large community event that
kicks off on Guymon Main Street
on Friday night. Many from the
community come out and enjoy
the band and bikes rolling in to
register and share a meal also
provided by locals.
Saturday morning began
with a heavy downpour and
chilly temps in the 40’s. The rain
subsided just at the time the last
bike was to be out. However,
everyone appeared to make it
out the gate in time and back in
time that evening. Cruising the
five states saw high side winds
through the Texas panhandle.
By the time we reached New
Mexico, we were pulling off rain
suits and considering shucking
the hoodies or leather as the sun
shown brightly and the temps
began to rise. The remainder of
the day proved to be beautiful and sunny.
Back in Guymon, the bikes all gathered once
again for the finale where they’re served a meal
and winners are announced for many awards such
as the oldest rider, youngest rider, furthest traveled
– which was from Arizona this year and many more.
A first place prize of $3000 was awarded for the
winning poker hand. The crowd appeared all very
pleased with the awesome ride they had that day.
That is, until we all woke up Sunday morning to
near freezing temps. Again, that’s the Five State
Run. You never know what all to expect other than
you’re going to have a blast!
