FRESHMEN
As an introduction to historical inquiry at the high school level , ninth graders begin with a broad history of the modern world that also provides the foundation for their development of essential historical thinking skills , their understanding of world geography , and the global historical context for US history in the tenth grade .

" Roots of the Modern World " is an interdisciplinary social science course for 9th-grade students , introducing fundamental concepts and skills essential for comprehending the development of our modern world from a global perspective . It explores the origins , beliefs , and lasting impacts of major world religions and philosophies , while analyzing historical events to understand their significance and impact on a global scale . Students delve into historical eras such as the Renaissance , Reformation , Enlightenment , Age of Revolutions , Imperialism , and early globalization . By the end , students will understand the birth of the modern world , and develop critical thinking and analytical skills essential for appreciating its complexities .

SOPHOMORES
An in-depth understanding of American history , and the nation ’ s role in the modern world , is essential for any student studying in the United States , as well as a graduation requirement by the State of Maine . Due to the upcoming redesign of the History Department curriculum , the class of 2026 will take their required year of US history in the 2024-2025 school year , and new required semester courses in Civics and Personal Finance in the 2025-2026 school year .

This course will explore the history of the United States chronologically , from the mid-19th century to the present , to help students understand both the development of the nation ’ s history over the past 150 years , as well as its role in the world today . Students will refine the process of historical inquiry through the development of both written and verbal expression , and examine primary and secondary sources for validity , point of view , and historical context . In addition , students will be expected to build competent and appropriate connections to issues in the contemporary world .
