Thornton Academy Postscripts Alumni Magazine Summer 2009 | Page 2
From The Headmaster
Dear Alumni and Friends,
Welcome to the new Postscripts. As you have probably noticed,
it looks and feels different than before. You can still find the
same information in these pages – reunion dates, for example,
and news about the school. But the updated design and use of
color will help us engage readers and present information in a
fresh way.
The redesign of our alumni magazine is just one change in the
nearly 200-year history of Thornton Academy. There are many
more changes in store for us. Here are just a few you can
read about: Eric Purvis ’81 has been named our new Board of
Trustees president (see story page 7), and we kick off our new
boarding program this fall (see story pages 4-5).
Having international students on campus will truly give Thornton Academy a global impact and will broaden the perspective
of everyone in our school community. They’ll be living in the
James E. Nelson Residence Hall, which was recently named in
honor of TA’s longtime Trustee and former Board President.
Residential life staff, student ambassadors, host families, staff
and faculty alike are ready for the challenge to help these
students feel at home in Maine. We are working hard to ensure
that their lives here will be meaningful and fun. Keep reading
to find out about what we’re doing to prepare for this historic
undertaking.
Each year after graduating from TA, young men and women
have gone forth to lead lives of confidence and courage. This
new group of boarding students will do the same. And like our
other alumni, they will leave a part of themselves here with us.
We want all of them to become good and thoughtful men and
women, people who care about others and have a deep and
abiding commitment to service.
