Well-Rounded Students
Gary Stevens always loved playing sports,
but he knows what it’s like waiting on the sidelines, sitting on the bench.
“I can relate to the kid who’s twelfth on
the basketball team,” Thornton Academy’s new
activities director says.
Stevens didn’t join varsity players on the
court or on the field as he might have liked to
growing up, but that allowed him to develop
other talents. A self-described “stats geek,”
Stevens began down the path he’s on now
when, at six years old, he helped keep score
at the girls basketball games that his father
coached. By the time he was in high school at
Mattanawcook Academy in Lincoln, Maine, he
was helping to manage its basketball, baseball
