Alumni Garden is
Blooming at TA
Perennials, shrubs,

Thornton Academy’s Alumni
House is big on curb appeal these
days.
The Alumni Garden project
began when David Kennedy ‘53
created a hybridized iris named
‘Thornton Gold’ and brought two
of the plants to TA in 2002. His
efforts inspired other alumni to
establish a new garden outside
Alumni House. Under the leadership of Roberta Sargent Gallant ’62
and Mary Alice Bellevue Tripp ‘70,
that dream has become a reality.
This spring alumni rototilled
the soil, planted shrubs and perennials, and mulched. The project
had many helpers. Carol Galli
of Grandiflora Garden Designs,
mother of two alumni, designed
the garden. Ken Rice ’74 of Log
Cabin Perennials donated perennials, and Rob ’78 and Virginia
Moody of Moody’s Nursery gave
flowering shrubs. Through Carol
Nadeau Barden ‘77, John and Ramona Snell of Snell Family Farm
provided perennials. Andy Cole
’81 of Andy’s Agway donated bark
mulch, and Bob St.Onge ’70 of Win-
terwood Farm delivered compost
and top soil. Curt Scamman ’66 of
Scamman Sod Farm installed turf.
Mildred Witherell Wood ’30 donated a rhododendron, and Marjorie
Cote Stewart ’68 donated funds in
memory of her mother, Dorothy
Cote. John Smith, a TA employee,
brought a white bleeding heart
from his own garden, and Ken
Janson ‘72 refurbished the Alumni
House sign.
Volunteers included Les Tripp
’70, Barry Gallant ‘58, Christina
Paul ’93, Bill Kany ’77, Barry Gallant ‘58, Janet Garon Huot ’48, and
Christy Clarke ’62. Their efforts
are in full bloom. The bulbs, forsythia, creeping phlox and rhododendron showed their colors in
the spring, and catmint, coreopsis,
daylilies, iris, weigela, sedum, Russian sage are in bloom. Later in the
summer the garden will feature
hydrangeas, ninebark and blackeyed susans.

Senior Alumni Celebrate at Spring Fling
Each year, the Spring Fling gives senior alumni the chance to reconnect after
a long winter, to remember years past and to learn about what’s happening
on Thornton’s campus today. At the event in May, Alumni socialized while
having refreshments and many enjoyed an afternoon of dancing to tunes by
Tom Ouellette ‘75 and Al Smith ‘73. Above left: Leonard Johnson ‘47, left, is
