“West Side Story” Hits the Mark
A cast and crew of more than 100 Thornton Academy students
successfully presented the musical “West Side Story” at the Harry
P. Garland II Auditorium this spring, under the direction of faculty
members Cathy Murray and David Hanright.
It was an extremely popular event, drawing hundreds of
students, parents and members of the general public to four soldout shows.
The re-telling of Shakespeare’s play “Romeo and Juliet” focuses
on two rival street gangs—the Jets and the Sharks—who battle for
territory and respect in New York City. Tony, a member of the Jets,
meets Maria, the sister of rival gang leader Bernardo, and the two
fall in love despite coming from different backgrounds.
