Back to Where It All Began: The Lobster Bowl returns to Thornton Academy By Linda Verville and Lauren Mesley T hornton Academy had the distinct honor on July 15, 2017 of hosting the 28th annual Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Classic. The East vs. West charity match-up brought more than 150 premier high school football players, cheerleaders, and coaches from all parts of the state of Maine to Thornton Academy in order to raise money for The Shriners Hospitals for Children. In some ways, it was another homecoming for Thornton Academy as the inaugural Lobster Bowl was held at Hill Stadium in 1991, and now 25 years later, it was once again at Thornton Academy. The all-star game is a charity event to raise funds for The Shriners Hospitals for Children featuring the state’s top high school senior football players and cheerleaders from the previous season. It had been held at historic Waterhouse Field in Biddeford for the past 25 years. The inaugural Lobster Bowl was held at Thornton in 1991 and in 1992 the game was moved to Alumni Field at the University of Maine in Orono. The following year the game was moved to Biddeford and until this year, it was always played at Waterhouse field.
