Back to Where It All Began:
The Lobster Bowl returns to Thornton Academy
By Linda Verville
and Lauren Mesley
T
hornton Academy had the
distinct honor on July 15,
2017 of hosting the 28th annual
Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl
Classic. The East vs. West charity
match-up brought more than
150 premier high school football
players, cheerleaders, and coaches
from all parts of the state of Maine
to Thornton Academy in order
to raise money for The Shriners
Hospitals for Children.
In some ways, it was another
homecoming for Thornton
Academy as the inaugural Lobster
Bowl was held at Hill Stadium in
1991, and now 25 years later, it was
once again at Thornton Academy.
The all-star game is a charity event
to raise funds for The Shriners
Hospitals for Children featuring
the state’s top high school senior
football players and cheerleaders
from the previous season. It had
been held at historic Waterhouse
Field in Biddeford for the past 25
years.
The inaugural Lobster Bowl was
held at Thornton in 1991 and
in 1992 the game was moved to
Alumni Field at the University of
Maine in Orono. The following year
the game was moved to Biddeford
and until this year, it was always
played at Waterhouse field.
With the recent condemnation of
the bleachers at Waterhouse field,
26
the organizers were pressed to find 1991 Guy Picard
a new temporary home for this
1992 Jeff Desrocher
year’s game.
1992 Art Leveris
1993 Kirk Purvis
This year's contest was dominated 1993 Matthew Leblanc
by the squad from western Maine 1992 Josh Knox
and the final score was, West 55
1994 Rick Kerry
East 18 but all the players and
1995 Chad Perreault
coaches seemed to agree that
1995 Scott Fisk
raising money for the Shriners was 1995 Jason Boudreau
the main focus of the day, and in
1996 Greg Lamarre
that sense, everyone could claim
1996 Nick Tabor
victory.
