How the “Snow Scoop King” is Supporting Thornton Students in Precision Machining BY LINDSAY LAPRAD HUDNOR L to R: Jane Garvin ’58, Cathy Baillargeon ’75, Caroline Drury ’46, and John Fogg ’82. Donald “Don” Fogg is best remembered as a hardworking and generous man by his family and friends. While attending Thornton, Don was a student athlete who excelled at baseball. Following his graduation from Thornton Academy, Don started working for Eugene Cole, the creator of the E.S. Cole Snow Scoop. He married Eugene Cole’s daughter, Audrey Cole Fogg ’51 and later took over the company. Fogg and the E.S. Cole Snow Scoop earned him the title of the “Snow Scoop King” in Down East Magazine. The business was a true family affair; Audrey kept the books and their four children helped in the shop, which was located behind their home on Ferry Road. John Fogg ’82 remembered, “I made the scoops. If I wanted gas money, I had to work in the shop.” In addition to working with his hands, Don also enjoyed playing golf. It wasn’t until after he was in the service and married Audrey that he picked up golfing. Don and Audrey were members of the Biddeford Saco Country Club. He passed the love of this sport on to three of his four children: Cathy ’75 (doesn’t play), Steve Fogg ’76, Kenny Fogg ’78, and John Fogg ’82. To celebrate his legacy, the Don Fogg Memorial Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament was established after Don’s passing in 2004. The Don Fogg Memorial Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament was held at the Biddeford Saco Country Club and quickly gained participation from the community. Friends, family, local businesses, and members of the Saco community came together and the annual event became a tradition for nine years. “Running a tournament, you learn what to do better each year. It grew exponentially. Everybody knows somebody. Word of mouth spread through networks until there were 31 teams,” said Don’s daughter, Cathy Baillargeon ’75. The Don Fogg Memorial Scholarship Fund and Thornton Academy partnered for the most recent golf tournament held in fiscal year 2015-2016. As a culmination of the collaboration, the Don Fogg family made a collective gift of over $19,000.00 to support Thornton’s innovative NTMA-U (National Tooling & Machining Association) program. NTMA-U is a first-in-the-nation educational partnership at Thornton Academy that provides students with the opportunity to earn a high school diploma while completing a competency–based certificate in Precision Machining. With a special focus on hands-on learning and workforce development, supporting NTMA-U was a natural choice in celebrating the life of Don Fogg. “When we started running the tournament, Eric Purvis ’81 suggested that we support something that connected with the spirit of Dad’s work ethic. He was hardworking and hands-on. He always said, ‘if you can help someone out, then help them out.’ That something was NTMA-U,” said Cathy.
