In Tuscaloosa , Alabama 16-year-old Ann Nunnally exited the movie theater after catching a film with her friends . She was window shopping in downtown and as she looked into a jewelry shop she heard herself say , “ Lord , I will go where you want me to go and do what you want me to do . Even if it ’ s to Africa .” And she meant it . Nunnally was committed to following God ’ s path for her even if it took her half way around the world . Little did she know that 50 years later , God would hold her to that promise to go to Africa .
Ministry was always on Nunnally ’ s mind . It was instilled in her at a young age . But the thought of becoming an ordained minister and the idea of “ going into ” ministry rubbed her the wrong way and Nunnally was hesitant .
“ I was rather reluctant ,” Nunnally said . “ I had always felt like ministry was not something you went into , but it was who you were .”
Nunnally was also nervous about the persecution she might face as a woman in ministry in the south . But , her husband was the source of encouragement she needed .
