Here are ten things in Tees Valley that you won’t want to miss. 1 Take to the water at Tees Barrage, Stockton-on-Tees Take to the water and explore the River Tees on kayak, canoe, paddleboard, powerboat or raft. Get the blood pumping by taking on the Olympic standard white water rafting course – recently used as a filming location for the Sam Mendes war epic 1917 – or take to the skies on Air Trail, the UK’s biggest high ropes adventure course. 2 3 Set sail at the National Museum of the Royal Navy, Hartlepool Voyage through maritime history at the National Museum of the Royal Navy in Hartlepool. Experience fighting ships. Feel the firepower of guns from the era with live demonstrations and re-enactments. Go back in time and explore the historic quayside and get a powerful insight into the tough lives of sailors from around the time of Admiral Lord Nelson and the Battle of Trafalgar. Climb aboard HMS Trincomalee – the oldest warship still afloat in Europe and see first-hand what life was like on board. Don’t go home without saying “Ahoy!” to the new play ship, perfect for pint-sized pirates and small sailors. 24 Catch a wave at Saltburn The picturesque town of Saltburn, with its beautiful coastline and Victorian charm, is the perfect spot to catch some waves. On or off the board there is lots to explore here. You can take a ride on the oldest operational water balanced cliff tramway in Britain, stroll along 4 the North-East coast’s longest remaining pleasure pier, spend your pennies in the seaside arcades and, of course, no trip to the beach is complete without sampling some deliciously fresh fish and chips followed by a Tees Valley favourite – a lemon top ice cream. Fill up at Orange Pip Market, Middlesbrough Make sure you are in the Boro for Orange Pip season, starting in May 2020, which takes over Baker and Bedford Street and Albert Road on the last Saturday of every month until September. Orange Pip features the best in local and regional food as well as live music and creative activities such as workshops and demos. But don’t worry if you miss it, these streets are lined with cool independents offering the tastiest artisan food and drink all year round. Make time for a cocktail stop at The Nuthatch, which has bars in both Middlesbrough and Stockton, and try its signature cocktail served in a unique bird-shaped glass – perfect to capture for your Insta story.
