“ Thus said God : ‘ For three sins of Gaza , for four , I will not turn away from punishment : because they took many hostages into captivity , whom they delivered to Edom .’” ( Amos 1:6 )
Hamas took 253 hostages into captivity in Gaza as part of the terrorism of October 7 . These included seniors , like 85-year-old Yocheved Lifshitz , whose captors beat her during her removal to Gaza by motorcycle . The oldest Israeli taken hostage was Shlomo Mansour , age 86 . His wife of 60 years and their 15 grandchildren pray for his safe return . Hostages also included infants , like 9-month-old Kfir Bibas , whose first birthday would pass without loved ones knowing if he was still alive .
Among the hostages were men and women , young and old , civilians and those in the military . 23-year-old Hersh Goldberg-Polin , who holds dual U . S . and Israeli citizenship , lost an arm in the attack before being taken hostage . Itai Chen , also of U . S . -Israeli citizenship was believed held hostage . His parents , honored guests at this year ’ s Sate of the Union Address , learned days later that their son had actually been murdered on October 7 , at the age of 19 .
