Between three and four thousand Israelis -- young and young at heart -- attended the October 7 Supernova music festival in the Negev Desert , about three miles from Gaza , for a musical escape , to sing and to dance and to celebrate the end of Succot . Sixteen DJs from around the world were to perform for 15 hours straight . At 6 a . m ., Hamas terrorists attacked from all directions on motorcycles and in trucks , opening fire on the concertgoers with AK-47s and rocket propelled grenades . Rolling Stone magazine reported that many of those who came to enjoy “ psychedelic trance ,” an intense , celestial dance-music subgenre , found themselves reciting the Shema in anticipation of imminent death . 260 were killed ; dozens were kidnapped and taken hostage . When the family of one 24-year-old Supernova attendee , who had recently moved with her family from Brazil to Israel , were planning her funeral , they asked for ten people to come and assure a Kaddish minyan . 10,000 came to grieve .
