James Brown

Brown was full of talent, he was an American singer, musician, songwriter, even a dancer, record producer, and bandleader.

James Brown was born in Barnwell, South Carolina on May 3rd to his mother, Susie, who was 16 years old and his father, Joseph Gardner Brown, who was 22 years old

1933:

1944:

Around this time was when Brown started to sing in talent shows and his first ever appearance at Augusta's Lenox. After singing "So Long," Brown won the show

Brown was convicted of robbery at the age of 16 and was sent to a juvenile detention center, which was located in Toccoa

1949:

On June 14th, Brown was paroled. After he was release and put on parole, he decided to get many jobs and also join a gospel group. Brown worked for the Lawson Motor Company and also for the local school as a janitor

1952:

James Brown and The Famous Flames had some hit ballads. One being "Please, Please, Please" and the other being "Try Me". The song "Please, Please, Please" is shown being performed by James Brown and The Famous Flames in the video on the next page

1956 - 1958:

James Brown's career was at its peak when the live album, Live at the Apollo, became known and he also had some big hit singles out called "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag", "I Got You (I Feel Good)", and "It's a Man's Man's Man's World"

1960:

Brown decided to change up the style of music he was performing, from blues and gospel style music to an "Africanized" approach to music making. Funk music was developed when Brown decided to switch to this new and different approach to music

Late 1960s:

1986:

This year was a big year for James Brown. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

James Brown passed away in Atlanta, Georgia on December 25th at the age of 73 from a congestive heart failure, which was caused by pneumonia
