The Zettabyte World: Securing Our Data-Rich Future | Page 9

EXPERT OPINION | Sally Eaves

We are already seeing the increasing intersection of education and data , something only heightened and accelerated by the pandemic .
Data will be a vital resource across content and its delivery . More data will also help students to ‘ learn smarter ’ and better understand how they learn - their metacognition ‘ made visible ’ through data . This also applies to older learners looking to re or up-skill .
Looking ahead , with the continuing rise of digital or hybrid courses , the use of big data predictive analytics to help determine what a student is or is not mastering will also be vital to teachers and mentors alike . Finally , I believe data and data-reuse as a resource to enhance skills development in areas where there are skills and inclusion gaps is vital .
We will see increased capacity for connected , immersive , intelligent and personalised educational experiences , such as dynamic AR / VR alongside AIempowered self-learning journeys .
Sally Eaves CEO Aspirational Futures All of this will require vast data capacity and effective data management .
However , this growing role of emergent technologies and the wider application of data to shape the educational experience will not lead to the demise of the educator . Rather , this can empower a complementary human-technology partnership , working in tandem across marking , assessment and learning planning , while creating a richer , more engaging and holistic educational experience . Educators bring personality , emotive skills and presence to the equation . Technology aside , education is at heart social as well as a personal experience .
