Life Sciences

When you think of vast quantities of scientific data , you might think of outer space and uncountable stars — there ’ s a reason “ astronomical ” means “ very large .” But even more data is being generated closer to home , in the rapidly developing fields of genome sequencing and highdefinition imaging .
As of 2019 , DNA sequencing is producing a petabyte of data every second , roughly a Zettabyte every 11 days . Imaging is facing a similar data challenge , as new types of scans offer far higher resolution to identify medical issues , but generate far more data , too . For example , 3D tomography scans can create up to 350 gigabytes of data .
Zettabyte-class data infrastructure will enable scientists and medical professionals to retrieve , manipulate and process this data more quickly and thoroughly than ever before . What ’ s more , they can apply artificial intelligence and machine learning to these massive datasets to identify trends in genome sequencing , train algorithms to detect disease , and fuel breakthroughs in scientific understanding and medical treatment .
