Many of your personal works are
black and white, or slightly toned,
why is that?
In some of my commercial work
I have been able to convince the
client to output the shots as black
and white images - for people and
strong textured images especially.
For my personal work, although
all shots are in Raw, I only shoot
in black and white. It may sound
strange to some, but often I can
see things in black and white; I see
the tones, the contrasts and the
separation. Perhaps that is how I
have trained myself…?
If I am lighting a portrait or subject
for black and white, I always
light it and preview everything in
monochrome, either in camera
or on an HD monitor. By doing
this, I can see exactly the shades,
highlights, shadows and shapes.
In black and white it is important
to get tonal separation, and it can
be quite challenging to make sure
that things like hair or clothing
tones don’t compete with the
background.
I guess it all comes down to personal
preferences and experience.
