YOUNG CHRONICLE Why Does a Nation Need a Constitution By Trisha Every country needs to follow some rules. These rules that a country and its government follows are compiled in the constitution. The constitution of a country is a legal document that tells the people how the government should work. It says how laws can be changed and added. It tells how the country's leaders should be chosen and how long they have to stay. The Indian constitution is the laws that must be followed by Indian government. It is the supreme law of India. India gained Independence in 1947 after nearly 200 years of British rule. The Parliament decided that for India to function properly they would need a constitution. This would allow the government to work smoothly. Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar was given the responsibility of writing the constitution. He is regarded as the architect of the Indian Constitution. Work on the constitution started on 29 August 1947 and finished on 26 November 1949. The Indian constitution declared India as a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic. The Indian constitution is the longest one in the world. The Indian constitution came into effect on 26th January, 1950. We celebrate this day as Republic day. Every year, on this day, grand parade is held in New Delhi. India invites important head of states as guest of honour for the parade. Barack Obama, President of the U.S.A. is the guest of honour this year (26/01/2015). Before the parade, the prime minister lays a floral wreath on Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate. This is to honor and pay respects to the unknown Indian soldiers who died fighting for India's freedom.
